Kids' dentistry that turns "I'm scared" into "Can we come back?"
A child's first dental visits shape their lifelong relationship with dental care. At NJ Dentales Group, we use a gentle, "tell-show-do" approach that builds trust step by step. Whether your child is a typically-developing toddler, a teen with braces, or a special-needs patient who needs extra time and patience โ we've got you.
When should my child first see the dentist?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a first visit by age 1 or within six months of the first tooth erupting. Early visits are short, friendly, and mostly about getting comfortable. We check development, look for early decay, and coach parents on at-home care.
Pediatric services we provide
- Comprehensive exams & gentle cleanings
- Cavity fillings (tooth-colored, kid-friendly materials)
- Sealants on permanent molars (typically ages 6-12) to prevent cavities
- Fluoride treatments to strengthen enamel
- Space maintainers if a baby tooth is lost early
- Tongue-tie evaluations
- Mouthguards for sports
- Orthodontic evaluations (referral to orthodontist if traditional braces are needed)
- Treatment for dental trauma (chipped, knocked-out, or displaced teeth)
Special needs & anxious children
This is where we shine. Dr. Anand has specific University of Michigan training in pediatric special needs dentistry โ caring for children with autism, sensory sensitivities, ADHD, and dental phobia. Our approach:
- Desensitization visits โ come in just to meet the team, sit in the chair, leave. No clinical work. Repeat as many times as needed.
- Longer appointment windows so nothing feels rushed
- Sensory accommodations โ dimmable lights, noise-reducing headphones, weighted blankets
- Parent stays with the child throughout the visit, always
- "Tell-show-do" โ every step is explained, then demonstrated, then performed
- Quiet appointment windows โ less office traffic, calmer environment
What you can do at home for great kid teeth
- Brush twice daily โ help/supervise until at least age 7-8
- Floss daily as soon as teeth touch each other
- Limit sugary drinks, especially between meals; water is best
- No bottle in bed (baby bottle tooth decay is a real and serious thing)
- Replace toothbrush every 3 months
- Use fluoride toothpaste โ a smear for under-3s, a pea-size for 3-6 year olds
Cost & insurance for kids
NJ Medicaid covers pediatric dentistry for qualifying children through age 21 (NJ FamilyCare). Most PPO plans cover preventive care 100% (exams, cleanings, X-rays, sealants, fluoride) and restorative care 50-80%. We work with you to maximize benefits.
