What to do before you get to our office
🦷 Knocked-out tooth
Handle it by the crown (not the root). Rinse gently with water. If possible, place it back in the socket — or store in milk or saliva. Call us right away.
😣 Severe pain
Rinse with warm salt water. Take over-the-counter ibuprofen as directed. Apply cold compress outside the cheek. Avoid chewing on that side.
💥 Broken tooth
Rinse your mouth. Save any pieces if possible. Cover sharp edges with dental wax or sugarless gum to protect your tongue.
🩸 Bleeding
Apply firm pressure with clean gauze for 15-20 minutes. If it will not stop, head to our office or an ER.
When to go to an ER instead
Most dental emergencies are best treated by a dentist — but go to an emergency room immediately if you have: uncontrolled bleeding, severe facial swelling spreading to your eye or neck, trouble breathing or swallowing, or a jaw you suspect may be broken.
