Modern root canal therapy โ comfortable, effective, and tooth-saving.
If you've been told you need a root canal, take a deep breath. Today's root canals are typically no more uncomfortable than a routine filling โ and they save a tooth that would otherwise need extraction. Dr. Anand performs root canals in our Somerville office using modern techniques that minimize discomfort and maximize success rates.
Signs you may need a root canal
- Persistent or severe tooth pain, especially when chewing
- Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold (pain lingers after the stimulus is removed)
- A pimple-like bump on the gum near a tooth (dental abscess)
- Darkening or discoloration of a single tooth
- Swollen, tender gums around a specific tooth
- A cracked or deeply decayed tooth that exposes the nerve
Sometimes a tooth needs a root canal without obvious symptoms โ only an exam and X-ray can confirm.
What actually happens during a root canal
- Numbing. We make sure the area is completely anesthetized. You will feel pressure but no pain.
- Access. A tiny opening is made in the top of the tooth.
- Cleaning. The infected pulp tissue inside the tooth is removed using fine instruments.
- Disinfection. The empty root canals are cleaned and shaped with antimicrobial solutions.
- Filling. The canals are sealed with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha.
- Crown. Most root-canaled teeth need a crown for long-term protection (usually placed 2-3 weeks later).
Total chair time is usually 60-90 minutes. Many cases are completed in one visit.
Recovery
Mild soreness for 24-48 hours is normal and easily managed with ibuprofen. Most people return to work the next day. Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until the crown is placed.
How much does a root canal cost in Somerville?
Front teeth (single canal): typically $700-$1,200. Premolars: $900-$1,400. Molars (3-4 canals): $1,100-$1,700. Add $1,000-$1,800 for the crown. NJ Medicaid covers root canals for qualifying patients. Most PPO plans cover 50-80% after deductible. We offer CareCredit financing and provide a written estimate before treatment.
What if I do not get the root canal?
The infection will not heal on its own. It will spread, eventually requiring tooth extraction โ and then implant or bridge replacement, which costs 3-5x more than the root canal would have. In rare cases, dental infections become serious medical emergencies. Don't wait.
